Lithuania Scrambles as Smugglers' Balloons Disrupt Air Traffic

Lithuania's Vilnius Airport halted air traffic after detecting smugglers' balloons in its airspace, part of a trend affecting European aviation. Weather balloons smuggling cigarettes from Belarus caused the disruption, leading to flight redirections. A similar incident occurred earlier this month.

In a dramatic turn of events, Vilnius Airport in Lithuania was forced to suspend air traffic on Tuesday night owing to the presence of smugglers' balloons in its airspace. This incident was confirmed by the country's National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC), highlighting ongoing challenges for European aviation.

Recent weeks have seen European airports such as Copenhagen, Munich, and those in the Baltic region grappling with chaos triggered by drone sightings and unauthorized air incursions. The NCMC revealed that operations were disrupted by weather balloons smuggling cigarettes from Belarus, urging passengers to adhere to official airport guidance for further updates.

As a result, eight incoming flights had to be diverted to alternate locations including Lithuania's Kaunas Airport and Warsaw. The Vilnius Airport had previously closed on October 5 due to a similar issue involving contraband-laden balloons from Belarus.
