Export Challenges: Navigating Quality Controls and Tariffs

Exporters expressed significant concerns over quality control orders and banking issues during a key meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday, according to industry officials. The discussion was a part of a convened session with export promotion council representatives, chaired by Minister Goyal.

During the meeting, several exporters highlighted the need to impose quality control orders on final products rather than on inputs, according to a participant. The discussion also covered ongoing free trade agreements being negotiated and signed by India.

This meeting took on added importance due to a 12 per cent drop in India's exports to the US, the country's top trading partner, triggered by a sharp 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering the US market. The increase in import duties is affecting exports from key sectors such as textiles, marine, and leather. From April to September, exports grew by 3.02 per cent to USD 220.12 billion, whereas imports climbed 4.53 per cent to USD 375.11 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of USD 154.99 billion.
