Top European Union leaders Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen are poised to attend India's Republic Day celebrations as chief guests. Their visit coincides with the imminent finalization of a free trade agreement between India and the EU, set to be signed on January 27. This move comes amidst rising apprehensions about Washington's trade and tariff policies, which have prompted important strategic shifts in global alliances.
The EU, as India's largest trading partner, clocked a bilateral trade in goods worth USD 135 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Both sides anticipate that the free trade agreement will significantly boost trade ties. Costa and von der Leyen will also co-chair the 16th India-EU Summit, aiming to advance a broader strategic agenda that includes key areas such as trade, security, defence, clean energy transition, and people-to-people cooperation.
India and the EU have been strategic partners since 2004, with the upcoming summit promising further strengthening of this relationship. In addition to finalizing the free trade pact, discussions will explore a new defence framework and strategic agenda, enhancing cooperation in maritime security, cyber defence, and counterterrorism. As global trade dynamics evolve, India and the EU reaffirm their commitment to a prosperous, sustainable future through enhanced collaboration.
