Delhi Spearheads Electric Shift with Ambitious EV Policy

The Delhi government plans a robust transition to electric vehicles by 2030, requiring 30% of school buses to become electric. The policy promotes the adoption of electric vehicles through tax exemptions and includes comprehensive waste management for EV batteries.

The Delhi government is set to enact a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) policy, potentially mandating that 30% of all school buses convert to electric vehicles by the end of March 2030. This ambitious policy might be unveiled during the upcoming Delhi Assembly budget session.

With a vision to bolster the adoption of EVs, the new policy could offer a complete road tax and registration fees exemption for electric cars priced below Rs 30 lakh. This initiative is a critical part of the education department's aim to electrify the school bus fleet in phased increments over the next decade.

Additionally, the policy may require all new electric three- and two-wheelers registrations starting 2027 and 2028, respectively. To manage the expected battery waste, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) will oversee the establishment of battery collection centers, ensuring environmentally responsible disposal across the city.
