In a move towards strategic autonomy, the Indian government has announced the development of dedicated rare earth corridors in the states of Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This initiative aims to reduce the nation's heavy reliance on mineral imports for critical industry sectors.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh disclosed in the Lok Sabha that these corridors will focus on enhancing local capabilities in mining, processing, research, and manufacturing. The goal is to cultivate a self-reliant ecosystem that aligns with India's national priorities, including achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2070.
The formation of a Joint Working Group comprising representatives from all relevant stakeholders has been set up to devise guidelines for these corridors. This group will scrutinize all facets before finalizing a Standard Operating Procedure to accelerate the project's objectives.
