In April 2026, India's commercial vehicle segment saw varied results, with strong domestic sales countered by weak exports. In April 2026, India's commercial vehicle sector experienced a blend of growth and challenges, according to newly released sales data. Noteworthy performers such as Ashok Leyland, Eicher Motors, and Tata Motors saw robust domestic sales, largely driven by rising demand for light commercial vehicles and specific heavy truck categories.
Ashok Leyland marked a 9% year-on-year increase in total vehicle sales, reaching 14,646 units, boosted by a 14% surge in domestic sales. However, a downturn in medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) bus sales tempered overall growth.
Tata Motors outperformed peers with a 28% growth in its commercial vehicle segment, supported by substantial increases across various sub-segments. Yet, the industry's export performance remained sluggish, as seen with Eicher Motors' 21.3% decline in export figures, especially in buses. Economic uncertainties and export pressures continue to pose challenges to the overall market trajectory.
