Timor-Leste is once again turning the spotlight on its rising generation of women entrepreneurs, as nominations officially open for the Third Timor-Leste Women in Business Awards 2026—a flagship initiative aimed at recognizing women who are reshaping industries, creating jobs, and driving inclusive economic growth across the young Southeast Asian nation.
Held under the patronage of President José Ramos-Horta, the awards have emerged as a key platform to celebrate and elevate the contributions of women in business, from grassroots enterprises to corporate leadership.
"Timor-Leste's progress depends on the full and equal participation of all its people—and our women are at the heart of that journey," President Ramos-Horta said, urging women across the country to step forward and share their stories of leadership and innovation.
A Growing Platform for Women-Led Economic Transformation
Organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC)—the private sector arm of the World Bank Group—in partnership with the Associação Empresarial das Mulheres de Timor-Leste (AEMTL), the awards are part of a broader effort to strengthen financial inclusion and entrepreneurial capacity in the country.
The initiative is embedded within IFC's Timor-Leste Financial Sector Skills Program, delivered in collaboration with the Banco Central de Timor-Leste and supported by the governments of Australia and New Zealand.
This multi-stakeholder approach reflects a growing recognition that empowering women entrepreneurs is central to building a resilient and inclusive economy—particularly in a country where micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of economic activity.
Women at the Core of MSME Growth
Recent data underscores the scale of women's contribution: women lead approximately half of all MSMEs in Timor-Leste, making them a critical force in job creation, innovation, and community development.
From agriculture and retail to hospitality and finance, women-led businesses are increasingly shaping the country's economic trajectory—often in challenging conditions marked by limited access to finance, information, and professional networks.
"Women entrepreneurs in Timor-Leste are building businesses with remarkable determination, yet many still face barriers to finance and connections," said Christina Ongoma, IFC Regional Manager for East Asia and the Pacific.
By addressing these barriers through visibility, recognition, and capacity-building, the awards aim to unlock further growth and opportunity.
Expanding Impact: From Recognition to Real Growth
Building on the success of previous editions—which attracted up to 100 nominations—the 2026 awards are expected to draw even broader participation from across the country's municipalities.
Importantly, the impact of the awards extends beyond recognition. Past winners have reported tangible business benefits, including:
-
Increased visibility and brand recognition
-
Access to new clients and partnerships
-
Stronger professional networks
-
Enhanced confidence and leadership capacity
These outcomes highlight how recognition platforms can serve as catalysts for business expansion and economic participation.
AEMTL President Hergui Luina Fernandes Alves emphasized the broader significance of the initiative:
"As Timorese women build their businesses, they shape the future of our nation—guided by courage, vision, and resilience. These awards celebrate excellence while strengthening value chains and driving job creation nationwide."
2026 Awards: Categories, Reach, and Inclusivity
The 2026 edition will feature 10 awards across five categories, recognizing excellence across a wide spectrum of achievements, including:
-
Women-led start-ups
-
Established enterprises
-
Corporate leadership
-
Financial inclusion initiatives
-
Programs supporting women's business growth
The awards are open to participants from all municipal areas, ensuring representation from both urban and rural communities.
Eligible applicants include individuals, businesses, NGOs, and institutions operating within Timor-Leste. Nominations must clearly demonstrate the nominee's achievements, impact, and contribution to economic and social development.
Driving Inclusive Growth in a Young Economy
As one of Southeast Asia's youngest economies, Timor-Leste faces both challenges and opportunities in building a diversified and inclusive economic base.
Initiatives like the Women in Business Awards play a strategic role in this journey by:
-
Promoting gender-inclusive economic participation
-
Strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems
-
Encouraging innovation and leadership
-
Supporting job creation at the community level
"Women-led businesses are a vital and growing force in Timor-Leste's development," said David Freedman, World Bank Group Resident Representative for Timor-Leste.
With increasing global focus on gender equality and inclusive growth, the awards also position Timor-Leste as a case study in leveraging recognition platforms to drive systemic change.
Key Dates and Participation
Nominations for the 2026 Timor-Leste Women in Business Awards are open until July 8, 2026, with organizers encouraging widespread participation from across sectors and regions.
As the programme gains momentum, it is expected to further amplify the voices of women entrepreneurs—ensuring their contributions are not only recognized but also integrated into the country's broader development narrative.
In doing so, the awards are helping to redefine the role of women in Timor-Leste's economy—not just as participants, but as leaders shaping the nation's future.
