The Mumbai Water Metro project is set to transform urban transportation in India by introducing ferries to alleviate Mumbai's traffic congestion, stated Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. The initiative aims to establish a modern and environmentally sustainable water transport system to cater to the growing demands of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Over the past decade, significant efforts have been undertaken by the government to conceptualize and develop a sustainable water transport framework for Mumbai. The recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway-based Hyke AS marks a pivotal step in this initiative, ensuring the supply of technologically advanced vessels. The project also explores the potential for setting up shipbuilding facilities in Maharashtra.

Expected to reduce pressure on Mumbai’s existing road and rail systems by utilizing coastal and creek waterways, the Water Metro project is poised to set a precedent for other Indian cities.
