The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service has recorded more than one lakh passengers within 22 days of commencing commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Saturday.
Passengers are paying Rs 730, excluding catering charges, for the journey, they said, asserting that the rail route is emerging as an affordable and comfortable travel option as airfares between the two cities range from Rs 9,000 to Rs 15,000.
According to officials, the semi-high-speed train service has ferried 1,01,050 passengers between May 2 and May 23, emerging as a popular and reliable mode of transport between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.
The train was flagged off by the Union railway minister on April 30, and regular services began on May 2. ''Since then, it has recorded high patronage, offering commuters a fast, comfortable and all-weather travel alternative on the Jammu-Srinagar route,'' officials said.
The train covers the distance between Jammu and Srinagar in a little over four-and-a-half hours, offering a faster and more convenient alternative to road travel, they said.
Railway authorities said the service has helped overcome longstanding travel challenges on the national highway, which frequently witnesses disruptions due to landslides and adverse weather conditions.
The Vande Bharat Express has maintained punctual operations and reliable service since its launch, they added. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, described the achievement as a matter of pride for Northern Railway.
''Carrying over 1,01,050 passengers in just 22 days reflects the trust reposed by people in this service. It is a testament to our commitment to providing world-class infrastructure and modern rail connectivity to the people of Jammu and Kashmir,'' Singhal said.
He said passengers have responded positively to the train's comfort, safety standards and onboard hospitality.
''Our focus remains on maintaining the highest standards of punctuality, cleanliness and safety. We thank all passengers for making this service a success in such a short span,'' he said.
Singhal said the all-weather rail link has fulfilled a long-cherished dream of connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country through a dependable transportation network.
He further said apart from improving passenger mobility, the service is expected to boost tourism and facilitate faster transportation of horticulture produce and handicrafts from the Valley to markets across India.
The train's modern amenities, including GPS-based passenger information systems and upgraded interiors, have added to its appeal, he added.
To enhance the travel experience, the IRCTC has introduced a special vegetarian Kashmiri menu on the route, officials said. ''Passengers can opt out of meals at the time of booking, with catering charges deducted from the fare. Food can also be purchased onboard, subject to availability.''.
Railway officials termed the achievement a landmark moment in the region's transportation history, highlighting the growing acceptance of modern rail infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
