A cargo vessel navigating the Gulf, roughly 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr, Iraq, experienced a severe explosion after being struck by an unidentified projectile on its starboard side, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident, reported on Monday, has raised concerns over maritime security in the already tense region. UKMTO said that, despite the explosion, they are not aware of any immediate environmental damage.
