The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a guarantee of up to $550 million to support Argentina's efforts to strengthen its security and justice systems while improving the country's access to international financing.

The guarantee marks the first time the IDB has backed this type of reform programme in Argentina. Officials say the initiative will help the country implement key institutional changes while also supporting broader economic stability goals.

The financing is expected to improve investor confidence and strengthen Argentina's position in international capital markets, providing an important boost as the country continues to pursue fiscal sustainability measures agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Support Expected to Unlock Additional Private Investment

The IDB estimates that the guarantee will help Argentina mobilize approximately $1.2 billion in private-sector financing. By reducing perceived risks for investors, the arrangement is designed to attract additional capital and expand access to funding from international markets.

The support is tied to the Argentine Government's Proactive Security and Justice Policies programme, known as PROSEJUS. The reform package focuses on reducing impunity for crimes linked to organized criminal groups and improving the overall effectiveness of law enforcement and judicial institutions.

Key objectives include strengthening criminal investigations, improving prosecution capabilities, enhancing intelligence operations and increasing the recovery of assets obtained through illegal activities.

Crime Reduction Seen as Key to Economic Development

The programme forms part of the IDB's broader Alliance for Security, Justice, and Development, which promotes integrated approaches to addressing crime and institutional challenges across the region.

According to IDB estimates, the economic impact of crime and violence in Argentina amounts to around 3.9 percent of the country's gross domestic product, a figure that exceeds the regional average. These costs include security expenses, lost productivity, damage to property and the broader economic consequences of criminal activity.

By improving the effectiveness of security and justice institutions, PROSEJUS aims to reduce crime-related losses, strengthen public confidence in government institutions and create conditions that support long-term economic growth.

The IDB said reducing violence and organized crime is not only a public safety priority but also an important factor in attracting investment, supporting business activity and creating a more stable environment for sustainable development across Argentina.
