Cameroon intends to enhance its exports to other countries, mainly Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Nigeria.

In regards to this, Cameroon Business Forum, which recently took place in Douala, recommended an aggressive policy of promoting made in Cameroon by developing a national production channel and directing it towards sub-regional and global value chains. Now the government needs to select four key products to be promoted, as reported by Business in Cameroon.

This is not the first time the private sector made such suggestions. A delegation of the Executive Council of the employers’ association (Gicam) led by its president, Célestin Tawamba was granted an audience in Yaoundé by the trade minister, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana in August 2017. During that time, the discussion was mainly focused on ‘the need for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Nigeria’.

Gicam had advocated that trade between both countries be more formal saying Cameroon would benefit from trading with the most populous country in Africa (more than 150 million inhabitants) with which it shares about 1,500 kilometers of border. DRC (81 million inhabitants) is also included in this register of economic preference, Business in Cameroon reported.
