Gujarat Government Reduces MBBS Fees after Student Protests

The Gujarat government has reduced fees for MBBS courses in 13 state-run medical colleges after protests. The fees were initially hiked for the 2024-25 academic year, leading to student and political party outcry. The new fee structure will see significant reductions in both government and management quotas.

In a significant move for medical aspirants, the Gujarat government has rolled back the recent fee hikes for MBBS courses in 13 state-run colleges under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS). This decision comes in response to widespread protests from students and political parties.

The fee reduction was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel announced the revised fee structure, highlighting the government's commitment to student interests.

Under the new structure, the fee for government quota seats has been reduced from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh, and for management quota seats, it has been cut from Rs 17 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, effective from the 2024-25 academic year.
