TMC MP Saugata Roy on Thursday accused the government of monetizing the education system and condemned its failure to curb the RSS's growing influence in the sector.
Speaking during a Lok Sabha debate on the Union education ministry's grant demands, the MP from Dum Dum, West Bengal, criticized the lack of world-class institutions and questioned why India lacks academic centers comparable to Harvard or Yale. Roy warned of continued brain drain unless educational standards improve.
Roy stated, 'Education in India has dwindled to a point where it has become a place to make money,' and pointed out that the GDP allocation of 2.7% for education is not enough to elevate academic quality. He also cited the significant number of Indian students studying abroad, with 8.96 lakh pursuing overseas education, and criticized the RSS for distorting history textbooks and undermining universities.
CPI (ML)-Liberation MP Sudama Prasad denounced the rising cost of education and called for the cancellation of exams like NEET due to paper leaks. He also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. BJP MP Anil Firojiya defended the government, while other MPs raised issues such as rural accessibility, financial struggles of universities, and the need for better facilities and support for marginalized groups.
