Kerala Schools to Reopen Post-Landslide, Aid for Affected Workers Announced

Kerala General Education and Labour Minister V Sivankutty announced that schools in landslide-affected areas of Wayanad will reopen soon and financial aid will be provided to impacted workers. The schools, currently used as relief camps, will be prepared for classes within 10-20 days. Support measures are also in place for students who lost educational materials.

Kerala General Education and Labour Minister V Sivankutty announced on Tuesday that schools in landslide-affected Wayanad will soon resume classes. Currently serving as relief camps, these schools will be ready for education within 10-20 days after necessary preparations.

According to Sivankutty, meetings with teachers, PTA, and other stakeholders determined that facilities would be upgraded before classes commence. These actions are in line with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's directive to ensure that the education of children in these areas is not disrupted.

The General Education Department reported severe impacts from the landslides: 36 children lost their lives, 17 remain missing, and 316 were relocated. Plans for continuing education include relocating students to alternative venues given the extensive damage to local schools. Moreover, a financial aid package was announced for workers and the next of kin of those who perished in the disaster.
