In a significant development on Friday, members of the JNU students' union took out a march to the Ministry of Education, pressing for increased scholarship amounts, among other demands. However, their progress was thwarted by police just outside their campus.
The police detained 43 students from the protest site, who were later released. A heavy deployment of police with multiple layers of barricading was evident as authorities aimed to prevent the students from stepping out of the university. Despite these measures, the students succeeded in marching half a kilometre beyond the campus before being stopped. A clash ensued as the students attempted to break the barricades.
Later, a delegation comprising the JNUSU president, vice president, and joint secretary was escorted by police to meet officials at the Ministry of Education. This march was part of an ongoing hunger strike on campus that has now entered its 13th day, beginning on August 11. While some students called for a complete strike, notable factions within the student body opted out of the protest.
