Mahbabul Haque, the chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, was arrested in Guwahati early Saturday morning for alleged involvement in a scheme promising students high marks through fraudulent means, according to law enforcement officials.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that a significant number of students were promised better scores, with examination centers deceptively altered to specific schools. The arrested students from the CBSE curriculum were taken to distant centers, sparking protests when expected results were not delivered.

Haque, previously embroiled in controversy over a fraudulent OBC certificate, faces serious allegations, including misleading students, exploiting examinations, and even contributing to local flooding issues. The Assam government is committed to upholding the integrity of education in the region, vowed CM Sarma.
