Thousands of Teaching Vacancies Plague Central Universities

Over 5,400 teaching positions are unfilled at central universities, with many posts reserved for OBC, ST, and SC categories. Despite a special recruitment drive filling 7,825 positions, vacancies remain due to retirements and growing student numbers, as reported by Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar.

In a recent update from the Rajya Sabha, it has been disclosed that central universities are grappling with over 5,400 vacant teaching positions. Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, highlighted that more than half of these positions are reserved for OBC, ST, and SC categories.

Despite the implementation of special recruitment drives that successfully filled 7,825 teaching positions, the issue of vacancies persists. As of January 31, 2025, unfilled positions include 788 for SC, 472 for ST, and 1,521 for OBC, Majumdar informed.

The Minister noted that vacancies are an ongoing issue, emerging from retirements, resignations, and increased student numbers. Both the Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission are actively monitoring the situation, urging central universities to fill positions through regular hiring processes.
