A Jadavpur University student has been taken into custody in relation to the March 1 unrest, increasing the total arrests to two. This development has stirred the campus, which has witnessed tensions with authorities over delayed student union elections.
Soumyadip Mahata, a member of the university's left-leaning student community, was detained after being summoned to record his statement concerning disruptive activities during an event attended by West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu. During the event, student activists formed human chains around Basu's vehicle, protesting for immediate elections.
Following the minister's departure, the agitation escalated, resulting in the office of TMC's education wing being set on fire. In response to the arrests, student organizations have planned further discussions. The university's faculty association has acknowledged Mahata's arrest.
