TikTok's Strategic Rollout of New Age-Detection Technology Across Europe
TikTok is set to introduce a new age-detection system across Europe, aiming to address regulatory demands for accurately identifying underage users. The system analyzes various data points to predict a user's age, with flagged accounts reviewed by moderators. This move reflects heightened scrutiny over age verification on social media platforms.
TikTok will introduce its innovative age-detection technology across Europe in the coming weeks, according to a statement given to Reuters. This initiative comes as the video-sharing platform, owned by ByteDance, navigates mounting regulatory pressures to identify and remove accounts belonging to users under 13.
This newly developed system follows a year-long pilot in Europe and involves analyzing profile data, videos, and behavioral indicators to determine if an account may belong to an underage user. Rather than automatic bans, flagged accounts will undergo review by specialized moderators, TikTok clarified. This measure is part of widespread regulatory scrutiny over how platforms verify user ages in compliance with data-protection laws.
As other regions, like Australia and Denmark, consider or enforce social media age restrictions, the European rollout of TikTok's technology represents a significant step towards enhancing online safety. The UK pilot project demonstrated its effectiveness by identifying numerous accounts of users under 13. TikTok continues to collaborate with Ireland's Data Protection Commission to ensure the system meets regulatory standards, reiterating their commitment to privacy and user safety.
