Stark Decline in School Enrollments Raises Concerns in India

Recent government data reveals a significant decline in school enrollment rates in India, particularly at the elementary level, with tribal communities experiencing notable drops. Concerns have been raised over financial mismanagement as contributing factors causing this educational downturn.

The Indian government has reported a concerning decline in school enrollments for the 2023-24 academic year, particularly at the elementary level. According to government data presented in Parliament, the numbers have decreased by around eight percentage points compared to 2021-22.

Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey addressed the Lok Sabha, highlighting that the gross enrollment ratio (GER) for tribal students at the elementary level fell from 103.4% in 2021-22 to 97.1% in 2023-24. Similarly, the GER for students from all communities plummeted from 100.13% to 91.7%.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari called for a government clarification on this significant enrollment decline, attributing it to economic disparity and financial mismanagement. He highlighted reports of inadequate educational infrastructure and excessive classroom loads in several Indian states.
