Faculty in this group typically initiated conversations to understand why students turned to GenAI and how to foster better decision-making in the future. This approach, while less common, better aligns with pedagogical theories that emphasize learning over punishment.
A third group, categorized for the first time in the literature as “collaborative”, included 20.3% of faculty who viewed GenAI as an opportunity for joint problem-solving. These instructors did not frame GenAI use as inherently wrong but rather involved students in discussions about acceptable use cases within specific courses. They also encouraged student participation in developing classroom policies, reflecting a shift from enforcement to co-construction.
The final group, labeled “dismissive” (8.7%), included faculty who acknowledged GenAI misuse but opted not to intervene, often citing administrative burdens or skepticism about detection tools. This hands-off stance, though rare, illustrates a growing fatigue among faculty navigating unclear expectations and uneven enforcement mechanisms.

Faculty, meanwhile, reported lower confidence in their own AI literacy than students did in theirs (3.36 vs. 4.03), and they expressed general doubt about the accuracy of AI detection tools like Turnitin and GPTZero (mean 2.74). These tools, the study notes, often produce both false positives and negatives, particularly when AI-generated text has been paraphrased. The resulting ambiguity puts faculty in a difficult position - trying to uphold academic standards with tools they don’t fully trust, while students fear unfair treatment.
The faculty’s mixed views on whether GenAI use constitutes a policy violation further highlight institutional inconsistency. Only about a third of faculty agreed that using GenAI tools violates official academic integrity policies (mean 3.35), and even fewer believed their own policies were robust enough to manage this evolving challenge. These gaps in understanding and trust suggest that many students and instructors are operating under unclear or mismatched expectations, undermining both compliance and ethical development.

Importantly, faculty should be encouraged to engage in transparent communication with students - not only about expectations but also about their own use of AI tools in grading and content creation.
The study also stresses the importance of maintaining trust through dialogic communication. By involving students in policy development and offering ethical guidance rather than punishment, instructors can reduce fear-based compliance and promote responsible use of emerging technologies. Institutional support, especially in managing workload, simplifying reporting processes, and providing mediation tools, will be essential to achieving these goals.
