Union Cabinet Approves Major Expansion for New IITs

The Union Cabinet has approved a significant academic and infrastructure expansion for five new IITs across India, with a budget of Rs 11,828.79 crore. This move includes the creation of 130 new faculty posts and five research parks, and will boost student capacity by 6,576 over four years.

The Union Cabinet has granted approval for a vast expansion in academic and infrastructure capacities at five new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Karnataka.

This ambitious initiative, requiring a financial outlay of Rs 11,828.79 crore over four years, aims to boost student admissions by over 6,500 and create 130 faculty posts at the professor level, alongside the establishment of state-of-the-art research parks to enhance industry-academia collaborations.

Located in Tirupati, Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu, and Dharwad, these IITs plan to increase the total student strength from the current 7,111 to 13,687, fulfilling the educational aspirations of many more students nationwide.
