On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha passed a crucial bill to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, with the government pledging Rs 550 crore in capital support. This makes it the second IIM in the Northeast, adding a significant boost to the region's education infrastructure.
The passage of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was accompanied by disruptions in the house, with ongoing protests from the opposition. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan led the charge for the bill amid discussions over electoral roll revisions in Bihar.
In addition, the Centre, in conjunction with the Assam government and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa), inked a Memorandum of Settlement aimed at holistic development. The Guwahati IIM is part of a broader Special Development Package intended to foster growth in Assam.
