In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has ensured better pay and permanent employment for thousands of contractual teachers in Uttar Pradesh. The court ruled that these educators deserve a monthly salary of Rs 17,000, effective from 2017-18, denying the state government's appeal to maintain a Rs 7,000 honorarium.
The Supreme Court equated the previous salary arrangement to 'begar,' a form of forced labor prohibited by Article 23 of the Constitution. The court emphasized teachers' crucial role in shaping the youth and nation-building, asserting that their contributions deserve suitable recognition and compensation.
The judgment mandates the Uttar Pradesh government to begin payments at the new rate by April 2026, with arrears paid within six months. The ruling also establishes these positions as permanent, highlighting that education continuity demands sustained support and respect for educators.
