Redesigning Classrooms for Neurodivergent Inclusion: A New Roadmap
SMART Technologies and the University of Melbourne collaborate on a study offering 36 recommendations for redesigning classrooms to support neurodivergent learners better. The research emphasizes inclusive teaching methods and flexible classroom designs to enhance participation and comprehension of differently-abled students.
Efforts to make education more inclusive for neurodivergent students are gaining momentum, thanks in part to a breakthrough study conducted by SMART Technologies and the University of Melbourne. The research presents 36 actionable recommendations aimed at redesigning classrooms to foster both academic and social success for students who process information differently.
According to the study, greater classroom diversity has not always translated into adaptive teaching methods, pointing to a strong need for innovative educational approaches. The report calls for flexible lesson structures, offering varied ways for students to communicate and engage, and creating psychologically safe environments for participation.
With an increased awareness of neurodiversity globally, the findings are particularly relevant for countries like India, where diverse learning needs are prevalent. 'In many classrooms, students struggle not due to a lack of ability, but because their learning styles aren't recognized,' said Anshul Srivastav, Country Head, India, SMART Technologies. The company aims to implement these insights for a more inclusive learning experience.
