Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has described the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as one of the most significant reforms introduced during the Modi government's 12 years in office, saying it has fundamentally changed the way students approach education and career choices.

Speaking at The Week Education Conclave 2026, the minister said the policy has brought unprecedented flexibility into the education system by allowing students to choose subjects and career paths that match their interests and abilities rather than following decisions imposed by traditional expectations.

He remarked that the earlier education system often restricted students to academic streams selected by parents or societal pressures, leaving little room for personal preference. According to him, NEP 2020 has helped free students from these limitations and enabled them to pursue fields that genuinely align with their aspirations.

Flexible learning pathways creating a motivated workforce

Dr. Singh said the policy allows students to change direction when they discover new interests or strengths, making education more responsive to individual talent. Learners can now explore diverse disciplines ranging from biotechnology and artificial intelligence to literature and other emerging areas without being confined to rigid academic structures.

This flexibility, he noted, is helping students enter professions by choice rather than necessity. As a result, future professionals are likely to be more motivated, productive, and committed to their chosen careers.

The minister also linked these changes to improvements within India's scientific community. He observed that many young researchers joining scientific institutions today are pursuing science because of genuine interest and aptitude, creating a stronger foundation for innovation and research excellence.

Technology expanding opportunities across India

Highlighting the role of technology in education, Dr. Singh said digital transformation has made learning opportunities more accessible and affordable for students across the country. Educational resources that were once concentrated in major cities are now available to learners from smaller towns and rural areas through online platforms and mobile technologies.

He pointed to the growing number of top performers in national competitive examinations emerging from non-metropolitan regions as evidence of this shift. Many of these students, he noted, have achieved success without relying on expensive coaching institutions, demonstrating how digital access is helping level the playing field.

The minister stressed that determination, self-learning, and effective use of available resources are becoming increasingly important factors in academic success. Drawing from interactions with students from modest backgrounds who excelled in highly competitive exams, he said perseverance continues to be one of the most valuable qualities for achievement.

Describing the current period as a promising phase for Indian education, Dr. Singh said today's students have access to opportunities that previous generations could only imagine. Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, he expressed confidence that India's youth will play a central role in shaping the country's future through innovation, excellence, and public service.

He also acknowledged the contribution of teachers and educators, recognizing their continued role in mentoring and guiding the next generation of learners and leaders.
