Sherlock Holmes 3 is a highly anticipated action mystery film that fans have been waiting for almost a decade. Despite the rumors about the third movie with Robert Downey Jr., the film seems to be stuck in development hell. The first Sherlock Holmes movie directed by Guy Ritchie and released in 2009, starred RDJ as the titular detective and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. The sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released in 2011, bringing back Downey and Law to reprise their roles. Talks of a sequel have been ongoing for over a decade, but Sherlock Holmes 3 has been stalling nonstop ever since, with the future of the franchise still uncertain.

Ritchie provided an update on Sherlock Holmes 3 in a recent interview with Collider, saying that he has done all he can at this point to make the movie happen. He has "moonwalked" away from it, knowing that it is out of his hands. According to Ritchie, it is up to Downey to figure out the next steps. Ritchie does not want to deal with the project any longer until he is actually needed to start working on the film. "Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr.]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this. The ball's in his court, so he's in charge of the script, he's in charge of the whole thing. I've moonwalked out of that until there's a time for me to get involved."

Last year, Downey said that he was planning to further build out his Sherlock Holmes franchise. He was reported to be producing multiple Sherlock Holmes spinoffs for HBO Max, although it was not clear if he plans to act in them with potential appearances as the detective. But spinoffs are not the same as Sherlock Holmes 3. Director Dexter Fletcher, who was previously announced to helm the threequel, later told Collider that he believes the movie will be made at some point, despite the pandemic pausing those plans indefinitely. "I do think it will get made," he said. "I think it has to be made. I don’t know what the timeline of that is, unfortunately, but I believe it should be. It’s fantastic. I think it’s about all the right people being at the right place, at the right time. I think it’s that. It’s one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind. But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I’m sure there are other people acutely aware of that as well. But I believe it should be because it’s brilliant. I very much hope so."

The fate of the Sherlock Holmes franchise remains uncertain and only time will tell what happens next. It is unclear whether the planned spinoffs at HBO Max will also fall into development hell and join Sherlock Holmes 3. Fans are eagerly waiting for any updates regarding the film's development. The third movie promises to be an exciting addition to the series, and viewers are hoping that the project will eventually come to fruition. For now, we can only wait and see what happens with the future of the Sherlock Holmes franchise.
