Paris Honors Ukrainian Athletes with Prestigious Grand Vermeil Medal Amid Olympic Games

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo honored Ukrainian athletes with the Grand Vermeil Medal, the highest distinction in the French capital, as an expression of solidarity during the 2024 Olympics.
"I can imagine today both your sadness and your pride," Hidalgo remarked, empathetically addressing the athletes. Rower Anastasiia Kozhenkova and diver Oleksii Sereda accepted the medal on behalf of all Ukrainian athletes amid a poignant ceremony at Paris' City Hall.
The event began with a solemn minute of silence for those killed in Russia's ongoing war. The reception also showcased photos of fallen athletes, termed "heaven's team." Ukrainian Acting Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi expressed gratitude to France for its unwavering support, acknowledging the recent establishment of the first Ukrainian house made possible by French aid.
