The French authorities have initiated an investigation into the harassment directed toward the ceremony's artistic director, Thomas Jolly. The online attacks followed a controversial tableau that critics claimed parodied Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper.' Macron, returning from his retreat to support French Olympic champions, decried the threats.

The scene, featuring drag queens, a transgender model, and a naked singer resembling the Greek god Dionysus, ignited fury from the Catholic Church and conservative circles. Paris 2024 organizers and Jolly clarified that their intent was not to disrespect any religious group. Macron emphasized that while criticism is acceptable in a democracy, death threats are not.

Macron also floated the idea of making the Olympic cauldron, a popular new attraction in the Tuileries gardens, a permanent feature in Paris.
