In an extraordinary mission, a veterinary team led by Dr. Anurag trekked an arduous 20 km to rescue hundreds of goats and sheep from a respiratory disease in Himachal Pradesh's remote Lahaul and Spiti district, officials revealed on Wednesday.

A three-day medical camp was established at Batal from August 3-6, targeting the ailing livestock in the isolated Bindi Padhar grazing area near Chandratal. The camp witnessed Gaddi shepherds traversing multiple streams, undeterred by the lack of proper safety equipment, to seek vital assistance for their suffering animals.

Veterinary Officer Dr. Anurag's team, consisting of pharmacist Amar Singh and attendants Roshan Lal and Kujang Thilley, was dispatched from Keylong immediately upon learning about the outbreak. The team inspected over 2,000 goats and successfully treated more than 600 severely ill animals, observing a significant health improvement.

The operation, supervised by Dr. Amitabh, Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, also involved monitoring the health of 13 herds. Gaddi shepherds, known for their nomadic pastoral lifestyle, praised the veterinary team for the life-saving efforts that prevented significant livestock losses.
