On the eve of Independence Day, two BSF personnel, Narender Kumar and Ranjit Yadav, were posthumously awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry. Ashok Kumar, who was injured in the violent ethnic clashes in Manipur, was also honored.
According to the Union Home Ministry, the late constables demonstrated ''indomitable courage with utter disregard to personal safety and devotion beyond the call of duty'' during the violent protests in Tengnoupal district on May 28, 2023.
The BSF unit was controlling an aggressive mob intending to burn the Elora Hotel. Narender Kumar died from his injuries the next day, while Ashok Kumar was injured but survived. Constable Ranjit Yadav was killed on June 6 last year while defending his post at Serou Practical High School in Kakching district.
