The UK's new one-pound coins featuring King Charles III alongside a design honoring British bees are now in circulation. Starting Tuesday, 2.975 million coins have been introduced into tills across the country, distributed via Post Offices and banks.
The Royal Mint revealed that this tribute to British bees is among eight newly designed coins, ranging from one pence to two pounds, featuring animals like the Hazel Dormouse, Puffin, and Atlantic Salmon. These species are part of active conservation programs, reflecting King Charles III's strong environmental advocacy.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, remarked, "The Royal Mint has been crafting the circulating coinage of each monarch since Alfred the Great. We are honored to reveal King Charles III's one-pound coin in circulation now."
She added, "There's a buzz of excitement among collectors and the public to obtain this special piece of history. We hope the designs will spark conversations about conserving these important species." The coin's design symbolizes over 250 bee species in Britain and aims to highlight their crucial role in pollination.
First unveiled last October, these designs showcase King Charles' dedication to conservation. They also highlight educational elements, such as enlarged numbers for children to learn about money. Production of these coins started immediately after the reveal, with several million coins struck in South Wales. The Atlantic Salmon 50-pence coin was the first to be circulated at the end of 2023.
In a poll conducted by the Royal Mint, the one-pound coin was the favorite among eight designs, gaining nearly 30 percent of nearly 3,000 votes. The Red Squirrel two-pence coin followed in popularity. The coins were created in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, with commemorative sets available on the Royal Mint's website.
