JD Payne, co-creator of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,' likened the challenge of adapting JRR Tolkien's expansive Middle Earth to filling a lake with a teacup. Payne, who developed the show with Patrick McKay, explained the complexities in an interview with PTI.
'Middle Earth is so vast,' Payne noted. 'Tolkien's imagination is immense. It’s like going to a rushing waterfall with a teacup and then trying to fill up a lake with it.' Payne emphasized the dedication to doing justice to Tolkien's rich world, alluding to the bespoke creation of costumes, props, and sets by their team of artists.
The show's first season, released in September 2022, received mixed reactions from Tolkien fans and critics. Payne mentioned that they couldn't incorporate feedback into the second season since the writing was completed beforehand. However, he acknowledged the varied responses and the timeless themes appreciated by many viewers.
Season two sees the dark lord Sauron, played by Charlie Vickers, aiming to regain power. Described as a psychological thriller, the season will portray Sauron deceiving Celebrimbor, the Elven-smith responsible for forging the Rings of Power. The series continues to feature a star-studded cast, including Charles Edward, Robert Aramayo, and Morfydd Clark.
