Isabel Allende Gets Immortalized as Inspiring Women Barbie
Chilean author Isabel Allende, renowned for her magical realist works, will be honored with her own Barbie doll by U.S. toymaker Mattel Inc. as part of the 'Inspiring Women' series. This initiative aims to inspire the younger generation by celebrating influential women. Allende has published over 40 works translated worldwide.
Chilean author Isabel Allende, internationally acclaimed for her contributions to magical realism, will soon be honored with a Barbie doll created from recycled plastic. The doll will accompany replicas of her dog Perla and her debut novel, 'The House of the Spirits,' as part of Mattel Inc.'s 'Inspiring Women' series.
The U.S. toymaker's initiative has previously showcased influential figures such as poet Maya Angelou, journalist Ida B. Wells, and singer Celia Cruz. Clad in a red dress with large earrings, the Allende Barbie aims to inspire the upcoming generation with stories of unsung heroes. 'I want kids to dream big,' Allende remarked in a statement.
Allende's prolific career blends historical events with elements of magic and fantasy, beginning with her 1982 bestseller 'The House of the Spirits.' An advocate for human rights and literature teacher, she relocated to Venezuela in 1973 following a political coup in Chile and has resided in the U.S. for over thirty years.
'Stories have incredible power,' said Allende. 'They challenge our minds and touch our hearts, connecting us to others and teaching us we are not alone.' Allende will also debut on Barbie's first podcast series alongside notable guests like Katya Echazarreta and Kristi Yamaguchi.
This move follows Barbie's recent efforts to diversify its representation, culminating in the 2023 'Barbie' movie becoming Warner Bros' highest-grossing film, adding emotional depth to a brand often critiqued for unrealistic beauty standards.
