Empowering Inmates: Berhampur Jail's Skill Upgradation Initiative

Berhampur Circle Jail in Odisha has started a skill upgradation program for inmates, focusing on weaving skills. The six-month course aims to make them self-reliant, allowing them to produce high-demand garments and earn income. Additionally, government loans and subsidies will support their entrepreneurial efforts post-release.

In a bid to foster self-reliance among inmates, Berhampur Circle Jail in Odisha has launched a skill development initiative focusing on weaving. According to officials, the programme aims to offer prisoners a productive path forward upon their release.

Under the guidance of expert trainers from the textile department, inmates will undergo a six-month training session, divided into three batches of 20 participants each. The inmates will not only learn to create stylish garments but will also earn a trained weaver certificate after an examination, said D N Barik, senior superintendent of the jail.

The programme aims to economically empower inmates, enabling them to start their own weaving businesses with the support of government loans and subsidies. During their incarceration, they will earn significant income from selling their creations, with earnings deposited directly into their bank accounts, noted Barik.
