Salman Rushdie's Harrowing Testimony: Surviving the Knife Attack

Author Salman Rushdie testified in court about being attacked with a knife at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. Author Salman Rushdie took the witness stand on Tuesday during the trial of Hadi Matar, accused of attacking him with a knife as Rushdie began a panel discussion at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.

Rushdie vividly recounted the 2022 attack, stating that he was caught off guard by Matar's approach, who he said wore dark clothing and a black face mask. Rushdie described the strike and subsequent struggle, noting he initially thought he was being punched but soon realized he was being stabbed as blood poured onto his clothes.

A series of stabs struck Rushdie's chest and torso, leaving him with severe injuries, including a stab wound to the eye causing intense pain. In court, he admitted to having false memories of the attack. Despite 17 days in the hospital and extensive rehabilitation, Rushdie reports only partial recovery.
