The delay in production is attributed to the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, with Pattinson commenting on the prolonged timeline, "It's a while...everything feels so long ago because Covid just erased three years." Originally slated for release on October 2, 2026, Warner Bros. has moved the date to October 1, 2027, with director Reeves indicating shooting will start sometime in 2025.

After its initial announcement at CinemaCon in April 2022, both Pattinson and Reeves will return, joined by co-writer Mattson Tomlin. Cast members such as Serkis, Wright, and Farrell are expected to reprise their roles. Serkis expressed his excitement over the project, noting a deep eagerness to continue the story, while Reeves hinted at innovations and surprises for audiences.
