On Wednesday, diverse groups paid tribute to Lieutenant Narendra Mayekar, a Goa native, who lost his life 25 years ago fighting ULFA militants in Assam. Mayekar, awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously, is to be honored with a memorial in Vasco, as announced by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar.
Lieutenant Mayekar, of the 11th Sikh Regiment, hailed from Vasco's Sada area and died in a 2000 operation. His mother, Bhagirathi Mayekar, expressed the family's enduring loss despite pride in her son's bravery. Meanwhile, his widow Neha recalled their life in Assam before returning to Goa.
Mayekar's courage in leading a critical operation, engaging in hand-to-hand combat, and motivating fellow soldiers resulted in significant militant casualties and the retrieval of crucial documents. These heroic acts ultimately claimed his life, leaving behind a legacy of gallantry.
