The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made a fervent appeal to residents, urging them not to cut trees for Holi celebrations. The civic body warned that any unauthorized felling of trees will lead to legal action against violators.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the BMC highlighted the importance of preserving greenery and implored citizens to report any tree cutting incidents to the civic authority, Mumbai police, or via the 1916 toll-free helpline. Holi, celebrated on March 13, traditionally involves a bonfire representing the mythological demoness Holika's defeat.
The corporation cited the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Tree Protection and Conservation Act, 1975, stating that cutting trees without permission from the Tree Authority is illegal. Offenders may face fines and imprisonment. The BMC emphasized the importance of maintaining urban greenery to enhance Mumbai's environment.
