In a significant cultural development, India has successfully added six new properties to its tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Among the notable inclusions are the Chausath Yogini Temples and the Ashokan Edict Sites, both spread across multiple states.
The addition, announced by India's Permanent Delegation to UNESCO on March 7, signifies a crucial step towards future nominations for the prestigious World Heritage List. India's tentative list now features 62 properties. The tentative list acts as a catalog of sites that countries aim to nominate for the acclaimed heritage status.
Among India's existing 43 World Heritage sites, 35 are classified as 'Cultural,' seven as 'Natural,' and one as 'Mixed.' The update follows India's hosting of a World Heritage Committee meeting, where the Moidams, a burial system from the Ahom Dynasty in Assam, received the UNESCO tag.
