Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful appeal for the release of imprisoned journalists and underscored the "precious gift of free speech and the press" during a historic audience at the Vatican on Monday. The first American pontiff was greeted with a standing ovation from 6,000 journalists who gathered to cover his recent election.

In a heartfelt address, the 69-year-old Augustinian missionary called upon journalists to champion peace and give voice to the voiceless, condemning the imprisonment of those seeking to report the truth. "The courage exhibited by journalists who risk their lives in war zones is recognized by the church as a defense of dignity, justice, and people's right to information," stated Pope Leo XIV.

Switching between English and Italian, he urged the audience to reject "the war of words and images" and to embrace peaceful communication. After his speech, Leo mingled with the journalists, signing autographs and posing for selfies, leaving an indelible impression of warmth and solidarity.
