The Government of India's approval for the Shillong airport runway expansion marks a significant achievement in boosting both tourism and connectivity in Meghalaya, as announced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. This infrastructure project is slated for completion within 15 months, facilitating the operation of larger aircraft and thereby enhancing the region's access.
During the 'Empowerment of Tourism Champions of Meghalaya' event, Sangma emphasized the importance of collective action among stakeholders to transform tourism in the state. He highlighted that tourism success relies on a comprehensive ecosystem, where government, private sectors, and community efforts converge to create memorable experiences for tourists.
Further supporting this vision, several tourism projects such as the Shillong Ropeway and Mawkdok Skywalk are underway. Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira noted tourism's pivotal role in Meghalaya’s economy, projecting significant visitor growth. The Umiam region is set to be globally recognized through strategic destination management, fostering sustainable tourism practices.
