Jennifer Paes, a notable figure in Indian women's basketball and mother of tennis legend Leander Paes, has passed away at the age of 72 after a long battle with cancer. Her funeral service took place at St Thomas Church in Kolkata.

Born Jennifer Dutton, she was the great-great-granddaughter of renowned Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt. A distinguished athlete, Jennifer captained the Indian basketball team and represented the nation at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

She was part of a prominent sporting family, with her husband, Dr. Vece Paes, being a member of the Indian hockey team that secured a bronze medal in the same Olympic Games. Their son, Leander Paes, became one of India's celebrated tennis players, winning a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and 18 Grand Slam titles throughout his career.
