Controversy Over Untimely Rath Yatra Sparks Religious Sentiments

The Jagannath Temple authorities in Odisha have opposed an organization's decision in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, to hold key temple rituals like Rath Yatra on incorrect dates. They emphasize it contravenes traditions and sentiments, stressing adherence to the prescribed Hindu calendar dates for such significant religious events.

The Jagannath Temple authorities in Puri, Odisha, raised objections on Monday against an organization in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district for planning to conduct significant rituals, including the Rath Yatra, on dates not aligned with tradition. IAS officer Arabinda Padhee, chief administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), communicated these concerns through a letter addressed to the Hapur district magistrate.

Padhee's letter highlighted that the Bhagwan Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra Seva Samiti in Hapur was planning their 'Netrostav' and Rath Yatra on June 13 and June 14, which conflicts with traditional dates set for July 14 and July 16 in the scriptures. The letter stressed that such actions are against the religious customs and hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees worldwide.

The Jagannath Temple managing committee, led by Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deb, expressed strong opposition to these untraditional practices. Padhee underscored the importance of following the 'tithi' in the Hindu almanack and requested that the Hapur district administration intervene to ensure observance according to the sacred dates to uphold the religious tradition and sentiments.
