Actor-turned-filmmaker Shaalien Malhotra has announced the release of ''Seven and a Half Dates'', a show billed as India's first musical web series.
Co-directed by Malhotra and actor Suyyash Rai, the eight-episode series will stream from May 24 on the YouTube channel of Novice Records.
The romantic comedy series stars Karan Wahi and Surbhi Jyoti in the lead roles. It will eight original compositions.
''Seven and a Half Dates'' marks Malhotra's debut as a writer and director.
The show follows two opposites who are matched by mistake, with an awkward first date gradually turning into something more, until fear, timing and silence come between them.
''After spending over a decade as an actor, I've always been someone who wanted to keep learning and exploring beyond just performing,'' Malhotra said. ''I'm actually a hardcore romantic at heart and wanted to tell a story that feels real and relatable.''.
He said directing Wahi, a friend of nearly 20 years, and Jyoti made the experience particularly meaningful.
''More than friends, they truly brought the characters to life and elevated them beyond what I had imagined. At its core, this show is for anyone who has ever been in love, is in love, or believes in love.''.
Rai said the project grew out of a shared passion for storytelling through music and emotion.
''Becoming a director was never planned, but storytelling became my passion because I wanted to tell stories my way - through emotions, visuals, and music,'' he added.
''Seven and a Half Dates'' is presented by Novice Records and produced by Luck Films.
