Portugal's Birth Rate Rebound: A New Dawn Amidst Aging Demographics
In 2025, Portugal experienced a 3.7% rise in births, reversing a two-year decline. Foreign mothers played a significant role, contributing to nearly a third of the births. Despite this increase, the number of deaths still surpassed births, highlighting ongoing demographic challenges in one of Europe's oldest nations.
In a significant demographic shift, births in Portugal increased by 3.7% in 2025, halting a previous two-year decrease, according to the latest official data.
Remarkably, foreign mothers residing in Portugal were the driving force behind this growth, accounting for nearly a third of the total births in the country, which is recognized as Europe's second most aged nation.
However, despite the positive trend in birth rates, the overall demographic challenge persists, as the total number of births, 87,130, remained considerably lower than the deaths, which totaled 122,151, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
