Tributes paid to Karunanidhi at DMK meet

The DMK today paid tributes to its departed President M Karunanidhi, hailing his contribution in various fields in the state and the country.

A detailed resolution adopted at the meeting underlined Karunanidhi's achievements in various fields, including his success in all the elections that he faced, and helming the state as Chief Minister for an overall 19 years.

Recalling his various measures as Chief Minister, such as the provision of free power for farmers, waiver of cooperative crop loans and rural electrification efforts, it said: "He

implemented many schemes for sustainable growth of villages and all-round development of cities."

The party paid tributes to Karunanidhi's efforts to ensure reservation in education and jobs for the backward sections of the society and putting them on the path of

economic prosperity. It also recollected his efforts in protecting minorities' welfare.

"He supported former Prime Minister, the late VP Singh in his efforts to implement the Mandal Commmission recommendations on 27 percent reservation (for OBCs) in

Central government jobs," it said.

Besides, the party recalled various other efforts taken by Karunanidhi to ensure social justice and equality, including enacting a law to enable members from all castes

become temple priests.

It hailed his steps taken to uphold secularism, to usher in industralisation in Tamil Nadu through big ticket projects like the Sethusamudram Shipping project, the Chennai Metro Rail and bringing in investments to the state.

Further, he was very vocal on the issue of regional autonomy, and ensured flag hoisting rights for Chief Ministers on Independence Day, the party said.

Referring to the various pro-women initiatives of Karunanidhi, including his strong support for the 33 percent reservation for them in local bodies, it said, "He was a

leader for the emancipation of women."

Many social welfare schemes launched by the late DMK chief in the housing and insurance sectors, among others, were being replicated across the country today, the party noted.

Hailing his love for Tamil, the resolution pointed out his literary skills and how he used his works against "superstition."

DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan and senior party leaders including Durai Murugan, Kanimozhi, TR Baalu and A Raja were present at the "urgent" meet, convened to condole the passing away of the Dravidian stalwart here on August 7.

Party leaders and invited functionaries observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

After battling for life in a private hospital for about ten days, Karunanidhi had breathed his last on August 7.
