The Kerala government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that one reason for the severe floods in the state in the past was to leave the water from the Mullaperiyar dam in Tamil Nadu suddenly.

Kerala's total population is 3.48 crores, its 1/6 percent i.e. 54 lakh people are affected by the flood. On August 18, the Supreme Court had asked the Chief Secretary of Kerala to inquire about disaster management, relief work, and rehabilitation arrangements.

After this, the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court. The Kerala government said that the state's water resources secretary had written a letter to the officers of the Tamil Nadu Government and the Mullaperiyar Dam, thinking of the danger.

Kerala had requested that water should not be left before the water level of the dam should be fully tanking. It was also said that the water level should be stopped after 139 feet, but there was no positive reaction from the officials of Tamil Nadu. With the release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam, the water level of the Idukki Dam became increasing and many times it had to open all the gates.
