Johannesburg's power utility, City Power, is set to implement load reduction measures in areas with exceedingly high electricity usage levels starting from this morning. With over 80 areas identified, grouped into six blocks, the load reduction will not exceed 2.5 hours per block.

Reasons for Load Reduction:

High Energy Demand: Despite warnings and efforts to encourage efficient electricity usage, energy demand has continued to rise, reaching critical levels.

Increased Consumption: Consumption during evening peak hours has seen a significant increase, with some areas experiencing up to a 110% rise compared to previous months.

Infrastructure Concerns: The strain on the network infrastructure poses risks of total collapse, especially with temperatures expected to drop further.

Additional Measures:

Ripple Relays Installation: City Power is installing ripple relays to manage electricity supply to geysers during peak hours, aiming to reduce the load on the grid.

Illegal Connections: Illegal connections are exacerbating the strain on the electricity network. City Power is intensifying efforts to remove illegal connections and recover owed revenue from non-paying customers.

Impact and Schedule:

Load reduction measures aim to alleviate pressure on the system and send a message to non-paying customers.

The schedule for load reduction is available on the City Power website, providing residents with information on when to expect power reductions in their areas.

City Power's proactive measures, including load reduction and addressing illegal connections, are crucial steps in safeguarding the electricity network and ensuring sustainable usage across Johannesburg. By encouraging responsible consumption and addressing infrastructural challenges, City Power aims to maintain a reliable power supply for residents while mitigating risks of system overload and potential disruptions.
